JD Designs - Fine Woodworks
It may be intimidating working with someone for the first time on a custom-designed item. I broke it down into just a few simple steps to show you how it all works.
Each project is unique. None follow the exact same formula. However, the following is the general process that works for most custom projects.
Contact me through the Contact Form at the bottom of the home page. Your message comes to me as an email. Let me know briefly what type of project you’re interested in exploring. A lot of details aren’t necessary at this stage. We’re just talking to see if we’re a good fit for each other. I’ll respond to your email as soon as soon as I can, usually in less than a day.
We’ll have lots of questions for each other. We’ll arrange for a way to talk with each other that's more efficient than email. Usually we start by arranging a time for a phone call. For some projects, it’s best if I eventually meet customers at their home so I can get a sense of their space and style and to take measurements, if needed. If that is not practical, we can meet via video conference.
During this stage, I’ll gain a better understanding of what you’re interested in having me do for you. Some customers know precisely what they want. Some have a fairly good idea of what they want but lack a cohesive design, and others would rather leave the design entirely for me to create in accordance with the architecture of their house and the style of their furnishings and decor. I’m happy to accommodate all of these people and everyone in between. If you have pictures you’ve found on the internet that show features that you want to incorporate in the final design, you can provide them to me. I’m also happy to work directly with your specialty installers, contractors, and designers if that’s what you prefer.
Once I’ve gathered enough information, I will begin to design the solution for you. This is one of my favorite steps. I will provide you with drawings and material samples as necessary. I typically create a 3-dimensional rendering for better visualization. It’s not uncommon that the design requires a few iterations before we get it where you want it. My design will be given to you no matter if I actually build the project for you or not.
As the design matures, I can begin estimating the cost to build. My estimate will consist of my cost for materials plus a fixed fee for my time and any handling. I will provide you with options to reduce the cost, as necessary. Likewise, I will provide options for increasing the overall quality and presence of the piece, if budget allows. Steps 3 & 4 are often performed together as one blurred step, with the design and price becoming more accurate with each iteration. The key is to get the price and design to a point that makes you comfortable.
If you’re ready to move forward with the project, I will provide a contract. We will review it and make changes as necessary. Although situations vary, I typically ask for only the estimated materials cost to be paid up front. Once the contract is signed and initial payment is provided, I can start the construction.
I will do the construction in my shop. I take lots of photographs during construction for my own archives. I’m happy to email you routine progress updates with photos so that you can witness your project coming to life.
Delivery methods vary widely depending on the size of the project. Options range from simple package mailing, to freight delivery, to personal delivery. Final payment is expected on delivery after you are satisfied with your product. The final payment consists of the firm-fixed labor fee provided in the estimate +/- any differences between the estimated materials cost and the final. Final materials cost will not exceed 10% of the estimate. I will provide you with an invoice that includes an itemized list of all materials used, so that nothing is ever hidden.
Enjoy your new piece, and take delight in knowing that it's a one-of-a-kind item that was handcrafted just for you. I stand by my work. If there’s any problem with the product, give me a call. I will make it right.
